From $40,000 in debt to Mt. Everest

Sometimes you meet a person who’s presence lights up the world.

Like Aleks.

I met Aleks about a year and a half ago and was immediately drawn to her honesty, transparency, incredible sense of humour and the way her words are woven like a beautiful scarf.

She joined a couple of DDA workshops and then dove deep into the  The Entrepreneurs’ Money Immersion in the spring of 2021.

I knew she was fierce in her devotion to changing her money narrative and stepping into being financially empowered.

Then, on January 21st, 2022 I received a prompt that I had been tagged in a post on IG.

When I read it, I cried.

Not because she graciously mentions our work together but because I was her.

She brilliantly describes her experience and what it really takes to change the trajectory of your world… I NEVER talk about money here, but here goes.

A few years ago, I was drowning in debt. I amassed credit card balances that I thought I could pay off with loans, which then became a vicious cycle of running the hamster wheel.

Always in debt. Never an end in sight.

I was so disheartened, but above all else, I was embarrassed. I hated feeling like I couldn’t take care of myself, and I felt powerless at not understanding how to balance and use my money for the greater good.

Today, I made the final payment on over $40,000 in debt. I keep looking at the $0 balance, wondering if it’s real.

To say I am relieved is not enough. I am proud. When I felt like I was at the bottom of the barrel, I knew that the only way out was up from there.

And no – I didn’t find any magical cure or financial solution to my problems. Instead, I found honesty.

I had to take a long, hard look at myself in the mirror and take full accountability for my actions. I then had to sit down and learn that money is energy, and that I’ve been living in a scarcity mindset all of my life – always hoarding every penny and awaiting the day where I would have none.

In that fear, I also found my peace. I realized that I was spending anxiously, on things and people that brought me zero joy. And when I began to crunch my numbers and dive into the mess that I created, I found my power (thank you @leahgoard for walking me there!)

I had to say no to A LOT of beautiful invitations and adventures. I had to sacrifice what I loved (travel) for what I was building: a new mindset and a new life to follow.

If you are struggling financially, this isn’t a “do this and you’ll be free” post. I’m not even offering anything, simply sharing because maybe you’ll find a little bit of yourself here in these words.

And believe me – if I can do this, you can, too. There’s no magic of any kind behind dealing with debt. There’s nothing that’s going to miraculously wipe away the financial decisions you made.

What DOES help is honesty, authenticity, a lot of vulnerability, and a little bit of vodka 🙂

There is a light at the end of the tunnel. The tunnel is long – I won’t lie! But it does end. And if you’re on the tracks, keep going.
